NAPLAN Preparation for Australian Home Educators: A Practical Year-by-Year Guide
NAPLAN — the National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy — is administered to all Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. Since 2023, NAPLAN has moved to an online adaptive format and is held in March each year. Results are reported against four proficiency levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs Additional Support.

The Australian Curriculum: Year 3 to Year 6
Year 3: English focuses on phonics consolidation, reading comprehension, and narrative writing. Mathematics covers number and algebra, measurement and geometry.
Year 4: English introduces persuasive writing and more complex grammar structures. Mathematics deepens understanding of multiplication, division, fractions, and area.
Year 5: The NAPLAN Year 5 assessment tests skills developed across Years 3–5. English focuses on informative and persuasive texts; Mathematics covers decimals, percentages, and 2D/3D geometry.
Year 6: Consolidation year before secondary school. English introduces more complex literary analysis; Mathematics introduces ratios and algebraic thinking.
Building a NAPLAN-Ready Home Education Routine
Daily (20–30 minutes): Independent reading. Choose a mix of fiction and non-fiction texts at and slightly above the child's current reading level.
Three times per week (45–60 minutes): Mathematics lesson focused on a specific Australian Curriculum strand.
Twice per week (45 minutes): English writing lesson. Alternate between narrative, informative, and persuasive writing types.
Once per week (30 minutes): Spelling and grammar focus.
