What Is NAPLAN?
The National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a national assessment for all Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. It tests Reading, Writing, Language Conventions, and Numeracy, administered by ACARA.
How NAPLAN Results Are Reported
Since 2023, results use four proficiency levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs additional support.
Reading: Comprehension Across Text Types
Read widely across fiction, news articles, instructions, and advertisements. Practice identifying purpose and audience. Work on vocabulary in context.
Writing: Planning, Structure, and Voice
Plan before writing (3–5 minutes). Use varied sentence structures. Choose precise vocabulary. Edit — leave 5 minutes to check spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Language Conventions
| Component | Key Focus |
|---|---|
| Spelling | Common patterns, homophones, word families |
| Grammar | Parts of speech, sentence types, verb tense |
| Punctuation | Full stops, commas, apostrophes, speech marks |
Numeracy: Problem Solving and Reasoning
Covers Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Questions test mathematical reasoning, not just computation.
A Balanced Approach to NAPLAN Preparation
Research shows the most effective preparation is high-quality, engaging classroom and home learning — not NAPLAN-specific drilling. Familiarise students with the online test format available through the NAP website.
